The Abu Dhabi Championship is heating up! Tommy Fleetwood is hot on the heels of leader Aaron Rai, setting the stage for a thrilling final round. But the leaderboard tells a story of more than just two players. Let's dive in!
Here's the Lay of the Land (After 54 Holes):
- -20: A. Rai (Eng)
- -19: T. Fleetwood (Eng), N. Hojgaard (Den)
- -18: N. Elvira (Spa)
- -17: A. Sullivan (Eng), D. Hillier (NZ)
- -16: R. Sterne (SA)
- -15: S. Lowry (Ire), K. Nakajima (Jpn), A. Del Rey (Spa), J. Smith (Eng)
Selected Others:
- -14: R. McIlroy (NI), T. Hatton (Eng)
- -13: R. MacIntyre (Sco)
- -11: M. Penge (Eng), M. Fitzpatrick (Eng), P. Reed (US)
- -10: L. Aberg (Swe)
Fleetwood, with a fantastic finish including birdies on the 16th and 18th holes, is just one stroke behind Rai. Rai, who clinched victory at the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship last year, is playing some stellar golf, with seven birdies in his round of 66. And this is the part most people miss: his only stumble was a bogey on the penultimate hole. Fleetwood, despite missing some birdie opportunities, kept his card clean with a bogey-free 67. He's clearly riding a wave of success, having won his first PGA title and contributed to Europe's Ryder Cup victory.
Nicolai Hojgaard, also in excellent form, is tied with Fleetwood. Spain's Nacho Elvira is just two shots off the lead, while Andy Sullivan and Daniel Hillier are also in contention.
Rory McIlroy, six shots back, is still in a strong position to secure his seventh Race to Dubai title.
But here's where it gets controversial: The Abu Dhabi Championship is the first of two crucial DP World Tour play-off events. The top 70 players are competing this week, with the top 50 advancing to the finale in Dubai. With a massive 9,000 points up for grabs this week (1,500 for the winner) and 12,000 more next week (2,000 for the winner), the Harry Vardon Trophy is within reach. McIlroy leads the Race to Dubai standings, but Marco Penge, who is currently at -11, is a threat. Fleetwood, while trailing McIlroy, would need to win both play-off events to have a shot at the overall victory.
What do you think? Will Fleetwood's recent form carry him to victory, or will Rai hold strong? And what about McIlroy's chances of clinching the Race to Dubai title? Share your predictions in the comments below!
