However, this latest proposal stems from last year’s race, where thermal degradation wasn’t a problem, and teams maximized stint lengths on medium-compound tires for faster lap times. But here’s the kicker: both Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton suffered front-left punctures, initially blamed on debris but later attributed to extreme wear.
‘We had the experience from previous years,’ Berra explained. ‘Two years ago, it was more about kerbs. Last year, it was high wear rates, especially volumetric wear, that caused carcass damage. We’re taking all these factors into account.’ Pirelli aims to avoid a repeat of last year, where teams extended stints without significant performance loss, even on worn tires. ‘We’re evaluating our options and will decide soon,’ Berra added.
The 2023 Qatar GP stands as the only instance where a multi-stop race was mandated due to an emergency measure, effectively becoming a three-stop race with an 18-lap stint limit. This decision caught Pirelli off guard after their Friday evening tire analysis revealed damage in the connection between the carcass and compound, signaling potential failures under prolonged use. Interestingly, while this year’s concerns and last year’s issues are wear-related, the 2023 problems stemmed from high-speed kerb strikes at corner exits, particularly at Turns 12/13, where aggressive kerbs have since been modified.
